Sports (or sports) refers to any forms of generally competitive physical activity that, through organised or casual competitive participation, seek to use, develop or enhance certain physical skill and ability while also providing entertainment for participants, and sometimes, spectators. In the US, most people think of American football when discussing sports. As football is a very popular sport, more people know and follow its rules than other sports. The importance of sports can be compared to that of music in the entertainment industry. While it has been considered by some as a form of gladiatorial combat, in the eyes of the public it is merely a sport.

While there have been many debates regarding the physical activities involved in organized sports, it is believed by many that sports are a great way of keeping young people physically fit and healthy, while educating them in aspects such as good health and self-confidence. The growing number of high school and college athletes to showcase the benefits of sports to our children, both in the spirit of promoting physical fitness and maintaining good academic performance. These athletes not only compete against other athletes, but their training helps them build mental strength that will benefit them throughout their adult lives.

Not only is the development of physical prowess obtained through competition, but it is also shown to have a positive effect on academics. Youth athletes that participate in sports often perform better in track and field events, and in turn receive high grades in their educational endeavors. The development of athletic prowess is not only beneficial to a student’s education, but it can be beneficial in the workforce. Many people have found employment after graduating from college with a sports-related specialty.

Athletes engaged in extreme sports such as mountain climbing, ice climbing and snow boarding almost always sustain an injury, even when their equipment is brand new. In most sports, the equipment is expensive, causing the cost of equipment to exceed the cost of the competition’s entry fee. Young people may feel obligated to purchase additional pieces of equipment that will help them compete, but the cost of equipment can quickly add up. Although young people may be inclined to spend money on costly gear, the long-term costs of using this gear can quickly become an obstacle in their academic careers, especially if they are not covered by a college athletic scholarship.

Parents often worry that their children will become bored with sports if they don’t use the specialized equipment that their sport requires. However, research shows that children who participate in sports develop better hand-eye coordination, better motor skills and superior body strength than those who do not participate in sports. Those who do not engage in sports are not as likely to develop the above-mentioned physical aptitude, and are more likely to become obese or overweight. Participating in a sport can not only improve a child’s grades in school, but it can also increase their self-esteem. Parents that allow their child to participate in a sport without any type of monetary investment are providing an enormous benefit for their child.

Another benefit of participating in popular sports is exposure to physical activity. Spectator sports provide an excellent alternative to other forms of physical entertainment. Most Americans spend at least one hour of their leisure time watching professional sports. Professional sport events involve both men’s and women’s professional leagues. The majority of these professional sport tournaments produce millions of viewers each evening. Many people watching these professional sport events either live at home or on television through various outlets.
